Cool or Creepy? The role of artificial intelligence in the design process

Waller Salon EF

Designing for artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly common, but what changes when designing with AI? Over the last few years, new assistive or intelligent design tools have emerged, allowing designers to generate imagery or automate parts of their design process. In this talk we will share our research and discuss recommendations on the value of artificial intelligence in design, where it can help designers and where it may impede their creative process––when it’s undesirable or just plain “creepy.” We will then share our experiences using various participatory design research methods to understand how UX professionals view emerging AI-driven experiences. Finally we will present a list of guidelines for UX designers and researchers who are developing AI-powered products and tools, with best practices to follow when designing AI-driven experiences.
